On Tuesday, 26th November 2024, the GAIA-TSF (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence Analysis for Tailings Storage Facilities) project officially kicked off in the vibrant city of Lisbon!

This ambitious project is set to revolutionize the mining and environmental monitoring landscape by creating a prototype system leveraging satellite earth observation 🛰️ and machine learning algorithms to enable continuous, multi-level, and multi-scale monitoring of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs).

Led by the Iberian Sustainable Mining Cluster (ISMC), the consortium unites top-tier universities and companies from Europe and Africa, underscoring a collaborative effort to address a global challenge.

Funded under Horizon Europe by EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme, the project spans 28 months, with the goal of delivering groundbreaking solutions for sustainable mining and raw materials management.

Highlights from the Kick-Off Meeting:

  • Eduard Escalona, EUSPA Project Officer, joined online to congratulate the team and share his vision for the project.

  • The meeting, hosted by CybELE, a Lisbon-based SME specializing in satellite environmental monitoring and advanced software, set the stage for effective collaboration and innovation.

  • ISMC, as project coordinator, is not only steering the technical aspects but also leading clustering activities to ensure strong stakeholder engagement and pave the way for market adoption of GAIA-TSF solutions.

We are eager to see the transformative impact of GAIA-TSF on mining safety, environmental sustainability, and beyond! 🌟

Stay tuned for updates as this remarkable journey unfolds! 🚀
